As the months quickly go by in 2018 and summer is approaching, it’s easy to forget those resolutions about exercise that we made to ourselves. For those of you who joined a gym and are still attending, good for you! But for those who haven’t quite followed through on their gym resolution (myself included), this article is for you.

It’s important to focus and discipline ourselves to take the time in our busy life to go to the gym. Gyms are popping up in every city and some are extremely cheap; some are even open 24 hours for those night owls. I have recently started attended the gym after receiving my Smartbeat cardiovascular screening results.  I created an exercise plan with our wonderful cardiologist Dr. David Porzio to start my healthy lifestyle. I have joined a 24 hour gym since I work late and after a shift I will head straight to the gym five days out of the week. The American College of Sport Medicine states, “Exercise recommendations can be met through 30-60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise (five days per week) or 20-60 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise (three days per week).” I’ve have seen results with my new lifestyle.

I interviewed one of our terrific doctors, Taylor Pollei, M.D., and asked him a few questions regarding the gym.

  • When did you join a gym? “I am going on 15 years attending a gym.”
  • How often do you go to the gym?  How long do you workout?  “I attended the gym 5 times a week and workout for an hour and 15 minutes each session.”
  • Can you still find time to hit the gym during an extra busy week? “Yes. I will go early morning at 4am if I have to.”
  • What are your favorite exercises or workout machines? “Free weights, cardio acceleration (sprints, jump rope, box jump).”
  • Have any funny stories or experiences at the gym? “I enjoy people watching and watching people flex in the mirrors.”
  • Any advice for newer people starting a healthy lifestyle? It’s 85% diet and 15% exercise. Pick something and stick with it. It’s not what you do, it’s that you’re doing it.”
