Importance of Antioxidants by Your Marque Team
What exactly are antioxidants and why do we need them?
Antioxidants are nature’s way of fighting off potentially dangerous molecules in the body. Such molecules come in the form of synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, plastics, and chlorine byproducts and are called free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that essentially feed off of otherwise healthy molecules in order to survive.
Antioxidant-Rich Foods
Most fruits have tons of natural antioxidants already in them but come in different forms. Those who are very heath-oriented and able to consume many fruits and vegetables daily are most likely getting plenty of natural antioxidants. For others who aren’t on a strict diet (like myself), the next best option is a daily multivitamin. The most common natural antioxidants that are found in food are beta carotene, selenium, vitamin E and vitamin C. If you’re choosing a daily multivitamin be sure to look one that contains that.
Beta Carotene
Carrots- the color of carrots depend on the carotene and you can probably see the similarity in the names too. Other food items are mangoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, red and yellow peppers and various other veggies and fruits.
Selenium
Seafood, poultry, whole grains, onions, garlic, wheat germ, and Brazil nuts.
Vitamin E
Dark leafy veggies, legumes, whole grains, brown rice, nuts, vegetable oils, etc.
Vitamin C
Citrus fruits like lemon, oranges, grapefruits, tomatoes, green veggies that are dark in color, red pepper, yellow pepper, green pepper, etc.
Extracts and Teas
When flu season comes around with the changing of the weather, it is definitely wise to ramp up antioxidant intake. I personally have found 2 types that help me through the season. The first one is known as Chaga and it is a dark fungus that grows high up in Burch trees. It takes like a mild vanilla so teams up perfectly with a morning coffee. It also has a ton of other health benefits and if you’re interested definitely do research, even a simple Google search will provide plenty of information. The second great source is acai berry which most people have already heard of or tried because it tastes really good. So next time you are out shopping and can’t decide between which juice or tea to pick- at least now you know which one has antioxidants and why it is healthy.
