Medical Imaging by Your Marque Team
Diagnostic imaging, also known as medical imaging, is a very common method using radiation to generate images of the internal structure of the body. This helps doctors accurately diagnose and treat patients because it provides a view inside your body for clues about medical conditions. There are a variety of medical imaging methods. Each method has its own way of creating an image which allows the medical professional reading the image to interpret it.
The most common imaging is an X-ray. X-rays use minimal radiation to create a 3D image and is mainly used to interpret bone abnormalities, such as breaks or fractures. It can also be used to view lungs and the abdominal region.
C.T. or Computerized Tomography also uses radiation for medical imaging. This method uses more radiation than X-rays and includes dyes as well as X-ray films. This method of imaging provides greater detail and is used for very specific area imaging and sometimes procedures.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) creates a highly detailed image using magnets. With the use of magnets one cannot have metal in the body, since this can be very damaging to a patient. Those with no metal in their body experience a relatively harmless method of imaging. The one major complaint about an MRI is its claustrophobic setting. A MRI requires a large tube to accurately create a detailed image. It’s required to place the affected body part inside this tube which can lead to a slightly claustrophobic experience. MRIs do require time to create an image and it makes a loud humming noise. MRIs are the only non-emergency medical imaging device. In other words, emergency rooms do not require emergency MRIs.
Ultrasound is another form of medical imaging. This too like an MRI is not harmful. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create this type of image. This harmless method is highly mobile in today’s modern medicine. It’s easy to transport and is used for a variety of minor procedures such as injections, to viewing and determining gender of babies, and diagnosing medical conditions affecting all parts of the body such as organs and soft tissue.
Each method of imaging is unique to itself. Modern medical imaging has become invaluable to medicine. It’s important to remember that each type of imaging requires a skilled medical professional to adequately perform the diagnostic procedure as well as read the image it produces.
