Seasonal Allergies by Megan Adams
Many people experience the discomfort and irritation of seasonal allergies. In fact, there are approximately 3 million U.S. cases per year. Here’s a review of the common signs and symptoms of seasonal allergies and how to help alleviate some of your symptoms using over-the-counter-products.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Sinus congestion (stuffy nose)
- Post-nasal drip, which may end up causing irritation at the back of the throat.
- Puffiness around eyes
I have had allergies my entire life and some of the things that have helped me through the season are:
Nasal Saline Spray
This spray helps to flush out mucous and debris in your nose that accumulates throughout the day. It can be purchased at any local drug store, I’ve even found it in Target.
Chilled Eye Mask
Many people have seen these in beauty departments or used them to decrease puffiness under the eyes in the mornings. These masks are to be put in the freezer, just like an ice pack, and applied to the face for about 20 min. This mask can help decrease the puffiness and inflammation of your sinuses and may also help with headaches one may develop caused by congestion. A win-win!
Lubricating Eye Drops
If you’re like me, dry eyes during this season can affect your day-to-day life by causing significant discomfort. I know no one wants to hear this, but increasing my daily intake of water and cutting down on caffeine has proven to help tremendously. Another thing I have had great luck with are lubricating eye drops. They’re sold in most drug stores and can be used throughout the day. Make sure to instill the drops when you are sitting in a safe, non-moving place since these drops usually cause temporary blurred vision.
These are just a few tricks I’ve learned over the years and hope they bring some relief to you this allergy season. Happy Spring!
